Mao Zedong & Deng Xiaoping
oil on canvas, horizontal panel 169x390 cm
The rise of the east and fall of the west next century seems to be inevitable given the sheer weight of numbers in the emerging wealthy middle classes in CHINA and INDIA and this will change the balance of power from eastern to western societies.
The social experiments which have taken place in CHINA during this century have set in motion philosophical (direction), physical (industry) and psychological (consumerism), aspirations which are being seen as desirable.
In the composition of the painting MAO is left of the central flags with layered images of the red guard and the cultural revolution in military formation over the Chinese flag which is formed by multiple images of a bicycle. From underneath and around the border portraits of MAO close the composition.
Repeated alternately in Chinese calligraphy overlay is MAO ZEDONG and THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION. To the right the flag is formed from layers of motor cycles and across the surface, alternately spelt out in Chinese is DENG XAIOPING and TO GET IT RICH IS GLORIOUS.
